discovery

I Bronzi di Riace
In 1972 two exquisite bronze statues, perhaps the most beautiful in the world, were discovered in the Ionian Sea 300 m offshore and 30 m below the surface near the coastal village of Riace in Calabria. They are major additions to the surviving examples of ancient Greek sculpture dating from the 5th century BC and are housed in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia  in Reggio Calabria. Professor Severino has visited them on more than one occasion and will discuss them in historical context and tell of his experiences. Special guest Dr. Gianni Impeduglia, originally from Riace and present at the time of the discovery, will provide an interesting little known detail to the story.
